  • The best wilderness trails of Urho Kekkonen national park and Hammastunturi wilderness

The history of Saariselkä MTB dates back to 2011 when we arranged the first Saariselkä MTB Marathon. In 2015 we expanded the event into a 3-day stage race. The event takes place on the fourth weekend in August.

Saariselkä MTB Stages is the biggest MTB event in Lapland. It is arranged by Saariselkä Booking and Inarin Yritys cycling club.

How it is here?

Saariselkä is located in Northern Lapland, 260km north from the Arctic Circle.

The Urho Kekkonen national park and Hammastunturi wilderness offer a unique setting for organizing a mountainbike event. The sceneries vary from open fell landscapes to pinetree forests. The trails are anything from technical rocky, rooty single-tracks to speedy gravel roads.

The conditions here in Lapland can be anything – the weather can be warm and sunny, or then it could be zero degrees, stormy and raining. The special conditions make also the racing experience special.

We are aiming at steady growth when it comes to size of the event. For the past two years, we have had around 300 registered participants. Our goal is 400-500 participants. Besides of Finnish participants, we have always a lot of participants from Norway and Sweden, and in future we are targeting our marketing even more to Central Europe.
